Does my computer keep shutting down unexpectedly?
So I have an HP 800 G1 with 14gb RAM. It runs an Intel core i5 4th gen processor, no GPU, uses a standard PSU with 320w power supply and a 1tb HDD. It's a fairly basic setup. Recently, my PC keeps restarting unexpectedly—sometimes it turns black and then comes back on normally. I checked for overheating and the CPU looks fine, so I didn’t replace the RAM. I’m not sure if the PSU is bad since the motherboard shows a green light indicating stable power, and that LED stays lit during restarts. Any advice?
Hello. It seems there could be various issues with your system. Are you receiving any signals from the motherboard, such as a sequence of beeps or LED indicators? You might want to visit the manufacturer's website and download the user manual. If you don’t have a physical copy, it’s worth noting that you’re not encountering a "blue screen of death" when using Windows. One possible solution is to install another graphics card in your setup. There may be something disrupting the system, which could lead to damage if not identified. Other parts might be affected or completely broken. The final approach would be to dismantle the entire system and reassemble it. Often, trying to diagnose the problem without taking action can prevent you from discovering the root cause. In the past, I’ve disassembled everything and rebuilt it from scratch, which worked out well, but I still couldn’t pinpoint the exact issue. I hope fellow forum members can provide further guidance. Good luck and stay healthy.
This means there were no BSOD errors, the system didn't trigger any flashing issues, and your PC simply restarted without any sounds or warnings.
Hi. Besides the parts issue, there might be a software-related problem. Have you attempted using any Windows repair tools such as Fix disk or Check disc? You can also initiate Windows Repair from your installation disc. After trying all the suggestions I've given below, you may need to reinstall Windows from your product disc or thumb drive. You could also opt to download your version of Windows from Microsoft, though you'll eventually require a product key.
Additionally, consider searching for information online using phrases like "Spontaneous PC shut down" or "intermittent PC shutdowns." It might be worth checking if your system is overheating. Inspect your CPU cooling setup—if it's an air cooler, dust accumulation could be the cause. For liquid coolers, a similar issue might exist.
It seems your CPU or motherboard could be shutting down due to overheating, which may explain why Windows doesn't report any issues. This suggests the software might not detect the problem. A frequent cause of shutdowns is an overheating CPU; you might want to install a new heatsink. Also, a faulty GPU could trigger a shutdown—examine the exhaust fans and dust buildup.
Try placing your PC on a flat surface during startup to observe its behavior. Also, verify if any applications are interfering by being corrupted or conflicting with other software. Back up your files and attempt to delete and reinstall them.
I hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions. I'm here to assist further if needed. Best of luck. 😊
This occurred with similar issues involving multiple components, possibly indicating a faulty motherboard.
Hi. Thank you for the extra details. I think it would be better if you begin with that information. I currently have access to the HP product page for your computer. I’m not familiar with this kind of PC beforehand, aside from the advice I’ve given earlier. I recommend contacting HP Customer Service or their Tech team directly. You might also consider taking your device to a repair shop for testing. If you’re only using it for simple tasks like browsing and emails, a budget Chromebook around $250 could be a good temporary solution while you fix things up. At least you’ll have a dependable machine for the essentials. I’m sorry I can’t assist further.
Mxshii. I checked your computer on Amazon and found it has excellent reviews. I’m not trying to be negative, but if HP isn’t able to assist you, and there are no repair shops nearby or they’re too costly, you might want to consider replacing it with a new model of the same type. When I recommended a Chromebook, I didn’t realize your device was cheaper than what I suggested. Based on past experiences, some repair services charge between $60 to $70 for basic fixes on a PC—roughly half the cost of your purchase. If you opt for a new PC, you could remove the old hard drive and store it in an external case, keeping all your files and folders intact. I hope your data is safely backed up elsewhere, either on another drive or in the cloud. Best of luck, and please let me know if you need anything else. Stay well.
Hello, I visited a repair shop and found that my PSU is failing since my computer keeps cutting out frequently while it runs. I plan to change the PSU tomorrow.
