When you mention HD, are you referring to the 'marketing' HD (720p) or FHD (1080p)? For me, it mainly comes down to the laptop screen size. I’ll use 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p as the different resolutions people sometimes use. I’ve heard 1080p can be called 2k because of the 1920 part. If your laptop is 14 inches or smaller, you really shouldn’t need a screen higher than 1080p. I have great vision—no glasses or contacts—and I have to run my 13.3-inch 2160p laptop at 150% for writing to be clear. Unfortunately, the better screen options are usually only available in 2160p screens. For screens 15.4 inches and above, getting a 2160p screen is straightforward, as long as the specifications are actually improved.
In short, I’d suggest avoiding DSR and opting for a more expensive screen if it offers better performance. The only situations where I’d recommend sticking with 1080p are if your vision is worse than 20/20, you require maximum battery life (2160p uses more power), the 1080p screens are actually higher quality or better specs, or you just want to save money.
Alright Alceryes, thanks for the feedback. My vision is close to normal, so that's fine. The issue with 1080p lies in my work—mostly web design, so I prefer FHD (1920 x 1080) pages with room for my tools and UI. The 1440-pixel height of QHD fits well, and I have two 27-inch QHD monitors on my desktop. I’m thinking about getting a laptop for occasional remote work and light gaming, but I don’t want to invest over £1500 just for a QHD machine since I won’t use it often. Still, I might be willing to splurge!
I have a clear requirement for 1440p+. I wouldn't hesitate at all.
