Does a 2400 RAM laptop support up to 2133 MHz?
I’m planning to increase my RAM from 8 to 16. I checked Crucial’s site and they recommended a model that fits my laptop, but Lenovo says the maximum is 2133. They suggested a 2400 RAM which would only work at 2133 or could cause problems. I asked this on Reddit without a clear response, so I’m curious if anyone has experience with this situation. OS: Windows 10 | Laptop: Lenovo Y700-15isk
Feel free to ask if you need more details. Thanks!
Is there RAM equipped with a 2400MHz XMP setting? If it's merely an XMP profile, you might expect it to be compatible with your laptop. However, you won't be able to activate XMP settings. Could you provide more details about the RAM model?
Using DDR3 was quite flexible, speeds adjusted smoothly without any problems. With DDR4 things are a bit more consistent, though I usually see around 95% success. It’s probably fine, but I’m not entirely sure. Plugging in the 2400Mhz RAM should automatically settle to 2133Mhz and function properly.
It’s DDR4, so it’s likely to work fine without any problems. Just consider downgrading to 2133 if you want. That makes sense, but I had to check with someone more experienced.
Based on my observations, Crucial memory has shown strong compatibility with various laptops. Performance may slow down to 2133 MHz naturally. I haven’t found anyone using that RAM with a laptop yet, but I remain fairly sure it will function. For peace of mind, I suggest buying from a store with a solid return policy.
