I constructed a Ryzen system with an Asus motherboard for a friend in December. When attempting to run RAM at its rated speed using DOCP (3200MHz), it wouldn’t respond. I visited his place three times, trying to manually set the XMP profile to push the memory beyond 2133MHz. The best I achieved was 2800MHz with identical settings, and the RAM stayed in QVL. We concluded that was the maximum we could get. Later, I built another PC for my brother without issues, using XMP with a Ryzen 5 3600, 2x8GB 3200MHz CL16 OLOy, and an Asus B450m-Pro4. Comparing it to your friend’s setup—Corsair 2x8GB 3200MHz CL16 kit, Ryzen 5 3600, Asus X570 gaming plus Wi-Fi—I wonder if the problem was with the board or the DOCP method.
DCOP is merely another term for XMP. Regardless of the name, it often involves running more RAM than what the CPU officially supports. All components—CPU, motherboard, BIOS, RAM modules—contribute to this. Running at higher speeds isn't assured. Certain setups simply don't function well together. Keep in mind, speed isn't the only factor; enthusiast 3200 modules usually run with tighter timings than standard, which can lead to issues. Many discussions exist about XMP stability not holding, and it does occur.
The main problem seems to be the interaction between the board and the RAM. It’s unusual that the RAM was listed under the board’s QVL.
I stopped relying on QVLs a while back. It didn’t always show the exact RAM version. Manufacturers might reuse the same part number for modules but can switch the chips anytime. If you followed the usual steps, like keeping your motherboard BIOS current, you should be fine.
It wasn't mentioned which RAM model was used, but the QVL indicated a specific version. That's interesting! For that friend's system, I might combine it into two devices—a desktop for his office (for his dad) and an ITX Lanbox for LAN parties. When I upgrade, I'll check all components.
