Hello, I recently received an i5 6600k instead of the i5 6400. I wanted to try overclocking it, but it seems to crash randomly during games, though it runs stably during stress tests. I’m still using the PSU from the prebuilt PC, which is a Lenovo 450W 80+ bronze model.

Here are my specs:
- Gigabyte z170 gaming K3
- i5 6600k
- 1060 6G (Lenovo version)
- Corsair Value ECC 2133 MHz, 2x8GB CL15
- Cooler Master 212 Evo v2
- Crucial BX480 SSD
- Some Seagate 1TB drives for the prebuilt PC

Do I need to upgrade the PSU because the CPU is overclocked and consumes more power? Stress tests reach about 120W, while the GPU draws around 140W.

When performing overclocking, it's essential to upgrade your components. It's common to notice crashes in games but not during stress tests; games often demand more power and can really strain a budget PSU. Occasionally, even a solid PSU faces problems with the high transient loads of Nvidia 30 series GPUs. A reliable PSU will serve you well in future projects.

The PSU in the above prebuilt setup is likely quite old, given your processor specifications. It would be wise to consider a well-built PSU with at least 550W capacity for future overclocking needs. For additional components or upgrades, a 650W unit might be more suitable.

The PSU is approximately 6 to 7 years old now; I acquired it in 2016, though it might have been sitting around for some time. The BIOS is the most recent release, and I was considering purchasing a Fractal Design Ion Gold 550W, but I'm unsure if it's suitable or not.

In my view, you should upgrade your PSU as it appears outdated. Also, consider creating a separate thread for Fractal Design Ion Gold 550W to access reviews there.
