Do you require a more advanced power source?
I was planning to upgrade my PC on a budget using an AM4 motherboard, but at the last minute I decided to switch to AM5. Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to purchase a new power supply, so I’ll have to use my existing one. On Part Picker, it says:
"Note: The Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard includes an extra 4-pin ATX power connector, but the Corsair CX650 (2017) 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply doesn’t have any available. This connector is meant for additional current. Although the system might still run without it, increased current needs or extreme overclocking could make it necessary."
Can you clarify what this means for my setup? Also, will the parts I selected work together?
I'm not confident about using a low-quality six-year-old power supply with all this new gear.
It might still function with just one 4X for the CPU, but it would be better to tweak the build to use a higher-quality unit or wait until you can afford something better.
It mentions a suggested wattage range of 500 to 600, which seems appropriate there. However, the motherboard includes an extra 4-pin ATX power connector.
What does "it" refer to? The PSU needs to meet peak wattage needs and do so promptly. An older PSU isn't something I'd rely on either. For a new one, I recommend a capacity of 700-750 Watts. Having a bit more capacity is fine just in case of peak demands. The power connectors (4-pin ATX etc.) should follow the motherboard's User Guide/Manual and only use the cables that come with the PSU.
