Consumer routers are crafted to handle multiple roles such as router, Wi-Fi access point, modem, switch, firewall, DHCP server, and sometimes additional functions. The design focuses on affordability, which leads to several compromises. Flawed firmware, low-cost parts, insufficient cooling, and placing these devices in less visible corners all contribute to the problems people encounter. Most users opt for a router because ISPs offer it as a bundled, budget-friendly solution. Internet outages or slow speeds are rarely catastrophic; users simply restart the device and resume normal use. I personally own every networking equipment in my home, including the modem, and my router isn’t something I buy—it’s built to last.

Speak for your provider, but mine Comcast still bills $10 or $11 each month. By using our own equipment we’ve saved them a lot—about $120 a year. Most cable modems last several years, so it only takes around a year and a half to recoup the cost. Also, Comcast has a reputation for supplying low-quality gear, though I’ve heard they’ve improved recently. Another point is that ISPs often have hidden features in their routers/modems, allowing them to adjust settings or restrict user access.

I favor having my gear myself rather than relying on ISP rentals. It’s cost-effective over time and provides superior hardware. Netgear has consistently delivered great results for me. Right now I’m running the CM500 modem with an X4 Nighthawk router. Previously, I used the A6210 Wi-Fi adapter on my desktop until I connected a CAT6 cable from the router in the bathroom closet to another room. That’s the setup I have there now. The image attached shows the network shelf in the closet before I moved the UPS for better visibility of the LCD display.
