A simple device would be a vintage mobile phone, powered via USB and lacking a SIM card.

If you take it very seriously, you might eventually move to a budget light gun and use barcodes on IDs, similar to the system at my climbing gym for members.
Each scan takes about half a second. That’s why I’m frustrated with QRs—they’re often unreliable, depending heavily on camera quality, software, focus speed, and lighting. Barcodes with a proper scanner are more consistent.

In consideration of barcode versus QR codes, after careful reflection and some research, numerous possibilities emerge. Criteria are generally broad, accessible, and straightforward. Excel can be employed to create barcodes, while a webcam offers a means to read and capture them. The attendance reports may require some attention, but Excel seems manageable. For reference, here are some useful links:

https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9wzdnc...n-US&gl=US
Camera barcode scanner – UWP applications
This resource explains what a camera barcode scanner is and links to various details about its capabilities.
I discovered several practical links, and tools like Google Forms could also be utilized similarly.
The project could be divided into three stages:
1) Producing barcodes for each student with details such as name, grade, chess rank, etc., into a Student table.
2) Capturing and logging the barcodes using a webcam during class entry, including timestamps in an Attendance table. This might present challenges if students scan themselves.
3) Generating reports from the Student and Attendance tables based on recorded scans.
It sounds like a rather enjoyable endeavor.
