Ensure DirectX 12 compatibility and a minimum of 4GB VRAM for handling large RAW files. The RX 580 can work in a pinch (I own two), but newer models like RTX 2000 or 3000 would be preferable. The consensus on low-end RTX 4000 series is mixed regarding value, and you might find a more affordable RTX 3000 that still meets expectations.

I’d review Puget Systems GPU benchmark scores to identify more budget-friendly options. Photoshop demands aren modest, but video editing benefits from a significantly faster card—such as an RTX 4090 ($2000+) or A6000 ($4600+).

Adobe generally prefers Nvidia hardware, but AMD options are still viable. You could explore Adobe’s GPU QVL to assess your potential purchase. If the card is outdated, you’ll receive a warning about suboptimal performance or incompatibility.

I recently purchased a GTX 3060 (12GB) in December 2022 for a 7950X setup. Sufficient for basic Photoshop tasks, it’s slightly slower with Topaz DeNoise and GigaPixel, but struggles with Premiere Pro and Topaz Video AI. I opted for a slower GPU to avoid overspending on speed, accepting longer render times (8–36 hours).
Based on Puget’s benchmarks, an RTX 3090 would have been three times faster but five times more expensive than the RTX 3060. Time isn’t a constraint.
Checking Puget’s site can provide general insights into your preferred software and hardware over time. Archives often contain useful comparisons for older versions.

I still have several systems that launch in 7 seconds and more with XP, suitable for the Nikon LS5000ED and SF210 slide feeder.
Nikon (and Canon) are phasing out older scanners, making it sometimes simpler to use legacy OSes instead of adapting 32-bit drivers for modern 64-bit environments. VueScan remains available but doesn’t support the SF210 as far as I know.
I’ll continue using Windows 10 until October 2025. I have NT4 drives, but I’m unlikely to run them unless I put in extra effort.
