Hi, I'm new to PC builds and hardware, but I need some guidance:
I have an i7 5820K at 3.30GHz, though I think it might be limiting my EVGA GTX 1080 SC since it's quite old.
I'm into high-level esports and plan to stream early next year, aiming for steady 150-200fps on games like H1Z1 KotK, Rocket League, PUBG, etc.
I also have a Vive, but running VR at high fps is currently fine.
I'm considering the AMD Ryzen 1800X AM4 because I can afford to spend more for better performance and FPS.
My motherboard is an ASRock, if that affects things.
Is this CPU a suitable choice in these circumstances? Also, is it compatible? Thanks!

I'm into esports at a high level and plan to stream early next year, so I need a stable frame rate of 150-200fps on games like H1Z1 KotK, Rocket League, PUBG.

My motherboard would be an ASRock if this changes anything.

I'm not a genius on your chip, but I'm not sure your chip is limiting your card. It looks like a strong chip, and the GPU tech doesn't seem to have completely surpassed it...

Hi, I'm new to PC builds and hardware, but I need some guidance:
I have an i7 5820K at 3.30GHz, though I think it might be limiting my EVGA GTX 1080 SC because it's quite old.
I'm into esports at a high level and plan to stream soon, aiming for stable 150-200fps on games like H1Z1 KotK, Rocket League, PUBG.
I also have a Vive, and VR runs fine at high FPS now.
I'm considering upgrading to an AMD Ryzen 1800X AM4 since I can afford it and want maximum performance.
My motherboard is an ASRock, but that might matter.
Is the 5820K a suitable choice here? Does it work well with this setup?
Also, is it compatible? Thanks!

If you think the 5820K is slowing down your GPU, it's likely because you're using single-threaded apps and need better IPC. Boosting the CPU to 4.5 or 4.6 could make a big difference—possibly even fix the issue completely. Another point: upgrading to a higher resolution monitor would help too. Higher resolutions reduce CPU load, letting the GPU handle more.
Regarding the Ryzen 1800X... if the 5820K is really bottlenecking your GPU in those games, this processor won't solve the problem. They have lower IPC compared to Broadwell or Haswell E chips.

i have an i7 5820k at 3.30gHz with a gtx 980 ti and it performs well, averaging 230-250 fps in rocket league and around 100-110 fps in pubg both on ultra at 1080p. I don’t think the cpu is causing any issues!

I own an i7 5820K with a 3.30GHz clock speed and a GTX 980 Ti. On average, I get 230-250 fps in Rocket League and around 100-110 fps in PUGBOOTS both at ultra resolution and 1080p. I don’t think your CPU is limiting performance. It really depends on whether the game is running single-threaded or with light threads. For more demanding multi-threaded apps, the stock speed on this processor should handle high-end GPUs and 1080p smoothly.
