Hey everyone! I just got a single stick RAM (Ballistix 16GB, 3600MHz, model BL16G36C16U4B). I’m wondering if anyone knows whether buying the same exact model again will let me use dual channel? My motherboard is a B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI, and my RAM is single rank. --------> BL16G36C16U4B.M8FE

Yes, they are located in the 2nd and 4th slots from the CPU socket.

I just want to emphasize that these are individual sticks, not a complete kit. The MSI Mobo site hasn't verified the single rank yet—only the dual channel is confirmed. If you look at https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/...upport-cpu, you'll see only the BL16G36C16U4B.M16FE1 listed, which indicates dual channel testing. I'm a bit confused because I might need to pay around $90 for the second single channel RAM, and if it isn't compatible, I could end up spending $180 for nothing.

If you purchase a kit, you can return it for a replacement if it doesn't function properly. Buying two single sticks should ensure it works, though RMA is typically limited unless they function correctly together. Overall, it's worth trying, but you won't have the same assurance as with a complete kit.

They refer to different concepts—single versus dual channel relates to the number and arrangement of memory slots on your board, while single versus dual rank deals with the type and positioning of RAM modules inside the PCB. There’s no single RAM stick that is strictly single or dual channel. If you purchase identical parts and fit them correctly, your system can support dual channel without implying a specific rank. I'm wondering if buying the exact same single rank RAM will allow me to use them in dual channel mode. I'm checking the MOBO site datasheet, which says they work with dual rank sticks, but it doesn't mention anything about single rank ones. That's all I need to know!

In short, the memory should function, but its speed might not reach 3600MHz.

Thanks a lot! To clarify: if you mean it won<|pad|>, there won’t be an XMP, and it should work between 2300-2600? That would mean I might need to use single channel, which could be better.

Memory modules typically work smoothly at 3600MHz and can handle 3200MHz as well. In the worst case, you might be able to adjust timings slightly and run at 3200MHz if the system struggles with 3600MHz.
