DNS Server for Raspberry Pi Configure and use a DNS server on your Raspberry Pi for efficient network management.
I need to set up a local DNS server on my network. It could be on a Raspberry Pi or an Ubuntu machine. I previously used DNSmarq for DHCP and reservations on my NDI network, but I’m not sure what options are currently available. Could you tell me what environment you’re working in? Thanks.
I tried PiHole on an RPi for DNS filtering, but setting up the correct rules was difficult. AdGuard Home seemed more effective thanks to its pre-built blacklists and it also runs on an RPi. Both can manage DHCP, though if your router already handles it, adding another layer isn’t necessary. When everything functions smoothly, it performs well. In my experience, without a UPS or extended outages (common in summer), the RPi can crash the whole network because of reboot issues. Worse, a corrupted SD card could cause problems. Running DHCP on the RPi would be risky—current tests use CloudFlare as a backup DNS and I’m moving AdGuard to a device that safely shuts down during power loss.
Pi-hole offers great benefits! I manage roughly 130,000 blocked domains, though I’m planning to expand it again at some point. Currently, I’ve added around 800 entries manually, now down to under 700. It’s rewarding to have the flexibility to restrict Windows and block all default connections until updates are ready or when I choose to upload telemetry data. I can prevent web trackers from being served by NoScript before it retrieves CNAME requests for scripts on a page, which cuts down outbound traffic even more. This lets me shape both local and external network activity, reducing unnecessary data usage and blocking slow-loading sites. In today’s fast internet era, this helps save energy and keeps unwanted tracking away from my browsing. While ads are vital for funding websites, their current state has led organizations like the FBI to suggest adblockers to curb malware risks.
