Hi everyone, I’m facing an issue with a certain card (Gigabyte 3080 Gaming OC 10G). It causes my screen to go black, and the only solution is to restart the computer. This is completely GPU-related, affecting both builds I’m using. I’m sharing my setup here, as I’m not sure about the other person’s system. My rig includes:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
- RAM: Corsair DDR4 16GB (8GB x 2) at 3600 MHz
- PSU: Corsair HX1200 1200W
- Motherboard: Aorus Master Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (version 22h2)
The black screen mostly appears during non-intense games like Rocket League or Dota 2. The issue started on my friend’s PC, which was the original purchaser of the card. After some troubleshooting, it seemed resolved, but then it reappeared. I tried:
- Reinstalling drivers via DDU
- Running Furmark and OCCT power on the same time
- Updating the MMO BIOS to the latest version
- Re-seating the GPU
After all that, the problem briefly stopped for a few weeks before returning. Once I swapped in my 2080 Ti GPU, it worked fine. When I connected the faulty card back, it functioned properly. However, after a while of reseating both PCs, the issue started again.
I noticed something odd: sometimes the “Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and recovered” event appears in Event Viewer (not always). I suspect a thermal issue, but it seems to happen only after some time since the card was reseated.
A few notes:
1) The card should still be under warranty, but it was bought from Newegg and shipped to Israel. Both sellers didn’t cover the issue.
2) I’m familiar with GPU removal, so I can do that if thermal problems are the cause.
3) If you think heat might be the problem, I’m open to checking thermal paste or fans.

Unless it's some defect on the GPU it should come from either high thermals or clocks going too high vs voltage In non demanding games the second case may be more probable, so - Check GPU temps /clock/voltage while gaming - if no thermal issue but very high clock try overvolting (slightly) your GPU
Have you reviewed the Windows event logs? The issue appears similar to what I experienced with my 4090, but the BSOD doesn’t show up since the GPU crashes. In the logs you might find useful information. If nvlddmkm.sys is referenced, it likely points to the same problem. The solution seems to involve using DDU and reinstalling the Nvidia drivers. Still, problems can reappear even after some time. I tried to resolve it, but after a month it started happening again, forcing me through repetitive driver reinstall suggestions. The hints suggest the GPU can’t access nvlddmkm.sys correctly or that the newest drivers are faulty. It could even be that Windows is behaving oddly together with the driver issues. Before changing hardware, examine the logs to see if they provide clues about the crashes and any related files.
I recently relocated out of my house and haven’t touched my PC until yesterday when it froze in a simple game called Cult of the Lamb. I attempted to use DDU and was surprised by another black screen while idling. It seems unlikely to be a temporary issue, though I noticed one of the VRAM thermal pads is dry and crumbling. I’m eager for more advice since troubleshooting in Windows has become nearly impossible.
