Display tearing occurring when utilizing G-Sync or FreeSync at a monitor’s native refresh rate? What is the cause?
I own an LG UD59 FreeSync Ultra HD monitor paired with an NVIDIA GTX 1070. I’ve connected via DisplayPort and activated G-sync through the NVIDIA control panel, utilizing the Nvidia Pendulum Sync demo I obtained. My observations were as follows:
With VSync enabled, I experienced approximately one stutter per second, accompanied by noticeable input lag and fluctuating framerates that dropped to 30fps—a very poor experience. Without VSync, Screen tearing was present—though not ideal. When G-sync is activated, there’s no stuttering, resulting in exceptionally smooth gameplay with my frame rate consistently around the 50s instead of being capped at 30 by traditional VSync. However, I continue to encounter screen tearing!
Despite setting my frame rate below the monitor's refresh rate, G-sync tearing persists across all framerates and refresh rates. Roughly 80-90% of the tearing is localized to the lower portion of the screen, often unnoticeable during typical gameplay. Nevertheless, approximately 10-20% of the time, tears appear throughout the entire display.
These distortions are infrequent but discernible; some games exhibit significant tearing, while others show very little. This issue appears prevalent even among users with G-sync monitors or high-quality displays, and the suggested remedy—enabling VSync alongside G-sync—is also problematic.
While combining VSync and G-sync resolves the tearing, it introduces new issues: increased input lag, significant stuttering, and a reduced framerate if the GPU struggles to maintain 60fps. What’s the proper resolution to this dilemma?
