Hey there, I'm trying to figure out some problems with my PC after moving in. Everything seems to work normally when I start it up, but sometimes the GPU turns off the LEDs, speeds up the fans, and the motherboard displays a VGA error. For a bit, I could force shut down the system by unplugging all the power cables from the GPU and it would boot up again. But sometimes this doesn't happen consistently, lasting days until something unexpected fixes it.
Another odd behavior is the troubleshooting lights on my PC change through different colors during startup: red for CPU, orange for RAM, then back to red, followed by orange for RAM, white for VGA, and staying there. If everything boots without issues, it switches from white to green after a couple seconds. This pattern makes me suspect a problem with the motherboard, especially since this board has been replaced several times over its life.
I have the following specs: CPU – AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, Motherboard – Asus B450-F, BIOS version – 2801, GPU – EVGA 2080 Ti with cooling, RAM – 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro at 3200MHz, Power Supply – Corsair RM850x, Boot drive – Samsung 750 Evo SSD.
I've updated the drivers for NVIDIA and ensured Windows is fully updated. I tried reapplying thermal paste thinking it might be a cooling issue, but that didn't help. I also tested the 2080 Ti on my roommate's machine, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't show any display at all.
My next guess is a power supply problem, so I upgraded from an EVGA 750W to the 850W model I currently have. My roommate's system with the 750W has been stable, while mine runs smoothly with the 2080 Ti. I also considered a PCIe power issue, but I don't have any high-power GPUs to test.
My motherboard BIOS seems outdated, which could be a factor. I'm also thinking about getting a UPS to provide extra power stability, as I've heard about power quality issues. But I'm just brainstorming ideas at the moment. Any suggestions or tests would be really appreciated!
