I bought a Surface RT recently and had some programming tasks for a class, mainly using it as a central device. I discovered a jailbreak for RT together with an x86 emulator. Could these tools help me run Eclipse or similar software?

It depends on whether it mimics an x86 setup. If so, yes. But I wouldn't suggest it. Unknown outcomes are possible.

Actually, it might be simpler to connect to a Linux system at home and develop there before using the Surface RT for coding.

I’m not very familiar with all this, but from what I found while looking into it, it seems to mimic the program in some way. I might be completely off base.

I regret not having a Linux system at home. Just my main desktop.

You can switch operating systems quickly by choosing to dual boot.
