Discussing the transition from 2666MHz to 3400MHz on a CL15 setup.
I've been experimenting with upgrading my PC's components to maximize performance, especially since I need a new motherboard and CPU soon. I'm considering adding a 3400 CL15 chipset and wondering if it would provide any noticeable improvement over my existing 2666 CL15. While my intuition says no, I'm eager to share my findings with others. I'm uncertain about DDR5 adoption in consumer boards yet, but I expect it to arrive in the next few years. What do you think?
DDR5 might be available starting next year, around 2021. You should visit your motherboard’s website and look for a compatibility list to confirm. If it matches, it should work. I’m not sure if I’ve heard about 3400MHz RAM, but I believe most common RAM models run at 3466MHz.
Upgrading RAM often isn't necessary unless you require extra storage. It should be thought about during the build process, not just added later. If you plan to replace your CPU soon, you can identify compatible CPUs and suitable RAM options.
Many are guessing that LGA1200 includes pin configuration for both PCIe Gen4 and DDR5. The JEDEC standard was completed in July, giving Intel ample time to verify compatibility using available data before finalizing. AM4 appears to be nearing its end, with AM5 expected within two years, potentially featuring DDR5 and possibly PCIe Gen 5 on the Ryzen 5000 lineup—something AMD would likely want to support.
Sure, adding more RAM can be a luxury I can manage, though it might not always boost performance. The urge to get the most out of my current setup is definitely appealing.
