Discussing the Steam Deck 64GB model.
Loading speed varies depending on the game and storage type. On an SD card it can be almost invisible or jump to 2.5x faster compared to an SSD. The parts that stand out right away are usually download times. Once the SD cache is full, performance drops a bit... But when you actually play games without comparing to a timer, the SD speed doesn’t become a problem. I agree with that!
Not soldered, mounted on a 2230 m2 card that can be swapped out. Though more challenging than a complete PC setup, upgrades are possible. iFixit offers upgrade SSDs with clear instructions. Apart from storage, the frosted screen in the 512gb model and included accessories remain consistent across all hardware. Performance-wise, the 64gb eMMC version matches the 512gb one. I verify this because I own both a 512gb unit I ordered ahead of time and a 64gb eMMC that I upgraded to 512 using an aftermarket drive. The latter was purchased for a family member. I’m holding out for a 2tb card if mine needs it.
