Discussing the purchase of kits
I’m thinking about getting more RAM, though I don’t really need it. It’d be cool, honestly. My dad has been assembling PCs since he was younger, and I asked him for his thoughts on certain topics. It seems his knowledge doesn’t always match what I’ve picked up over the past few years. For instance, he once believed you’d need to pair AMD components together and couldn’t use an AMD CPU with an NVIDIA GPU. Today we talked, and he suggested if I had the budget, buying two 2x8 kits instead of one would be better. Should I go with that plan, or is it okay to get one now and wait for the other? Right now he’s suggesting 2x16 instead of 2x8.
This idea is incorrect and often misunderstood. Using both an AMD CPU and GPU doesn’t provide any performance advantages. Many people purchase additional memory kits later, even though they’re from the same set, to avoid potential problems like faulty RAM or recalls. Retailers include these kits to ensure reliability across batches.
You're considering a mix of storage sizes—starting with 16GB and adding more as needed. For casual gaming, a single 8GB unit seems sufficient now, with the option to upgrade later. If you're unsure about future needs, a 2GB kit is safer. Eventually, just add more drives when required, rather than sticking with a smaller total capacity upfront.
