I constructed my initial PC in 2012 and swapped out the motherboard and CPU around 2019. Back then, I had limited knowledge of product release schedules, so I chose an 8700k. I wasn’t aware at the time that the socket would only be available for a single more generation. Now I’m considering a CPU upgrade again, and I’d like to replace the motherboard as well, otherwise I might end up with a 9900K at best. My question is whether it’s smarter to purchase a 1700 board and a 14th-gen CPU after the 1851 socket launches (assuming a price reduction), or should I opt for a 1700 now, despite the uncertainty? I think Intel is planning to release the 1851 socket this year, so timing could be important. Expecting a possible discount, I wonder if it’s better to wait and upgrade later, or jump into the 1851 early to have room for a potentially outdated but still significant CPU upgrade (possibly moving from 15th to 18-19 generations depending on how long the socket stays available). It feels like sockets are changing more frequently these days, so a 1700 now might be a safer bet.
For future-proofing your build, AMD remains a strong contender with its AM4 lineup that has sustained multiple generations, while Intel is shifting focus to newer architectures. AM5 is expected to back at least three cycles, offering solid support for upcoming tech. In gaming, 3D v-cache currently provides a clear edge, making it the go-to option for performance. Even if you opt for an older AM4 model in August 2024, a 5700x3D chip could be a smart investment if priced reasonably. For a more modern setup, spending around $600 on an AM5 platform with a 7800x3D and high-speed RAM would be highly advantageous. The 9800x3D may not justify the extra cost given recent Ryzen performance issues. Intel’s upcoming 15th-gen chips seem promising, but sticking to consistent socket designs could help avoid frequent upgrades. Overall, AM5 and strong 3D caching configurations appear to be the most viable paths for long-term gaming needs.
I’m not keen on moving to AMD right now, though I appreciate the suggestions. I’ll remember your advice if I consider a change later.
If you're arbitrarily choosing Intel, then I would wait till their next socket than jumping on LGA1700 at this point, especially towards the high end. The higher end 13th and 14th generation CPUs have some severe issues that Intel has known about for years but seemingly hoped it would just go away. Seemingly manufacturing issues as well as firmware based ones that are causing instability and/or premature failure of the CPUs. There's been tons of videos out about it in the last few weeks, here's at least one:
It's not about apple versus android. The software compatibility won't change for you. You're already on a different platform, so whether you get an AM5 or another version doesn't matter—it's just a new setup for you. The only variation is the sticker color: red or blue. Arrow Lake will come later. Intel 13th and 14th generations aren't worth it until we know they won't make any sudden changes.
We’re looking at alternatives to Am5. A cheaper Zen 4 option is worth considering. You can purchase Zen 4 now and upgrade to Zen 5X3D or Zen 6/Zen6X3D within four years for affordable performance. Alternatively, you might wait for Arrow Lake and rebuild later—about six years before needing another overhaul. We have limited information about Nova Lake, and it’s unclear if it will align with the same platform. Honestly, no one is recommending Raptor Lake until its safety is confirmed, which likely won’t happen until after Arrow Lake. In the meantime, it seems unlikely we’ll see a clear choice between these options soon.
Discussing CPU upgrades drops feels like talking about electric cars without mentioning Tesla. Intel hasn't seen much improvement lately—probably just one generation of small gains. AMD has been the main player in this space, especially with AM5, though they haven’t promised a long-term solution like AM4 did with AM5. It’s clear AMD is focusing on extending its current designs rather than changing them. I’ve owned multiple generations of these processors, so it’s hard to ignore the facts.
