Discussing the choice of power supply for a restored mid-tower ATX computer - which one to use?
I just got a "use it or lose it" style message from Mrs., and I'm thinking about bringing back an ATX case from around 2004. It originally came with an Antec True480 ATX power supply, which was paired with an AMB Athlon64 3000+ CPU on an MSI K8N Neo2 Platnum motherboard. The True480 worked perfectly, but the new modular PSUs make the old wiring harness look quite outdated compared to today's designs.
I discovered a PC build kit that uses an ASRock Z690 Steel Legend ATX LGA 1700 motherboard with an Intel Core 17-12700K 3.6GHz 12-core CPU. I know it’s a bit old, but I won’t add a dedicated graphics card and will rely on the CPU’s built-in graphics instead. The package includes more parts, but they’re not overly power-hungry, so I’m not listing them all here.
The person selling me the components suggested an 850W PSU for my build. I started researching options, especially focusing on low-noise models, which were a top priority for me. But then I noticed something that might change things: the emergence of ATX 3.0 power supplies.
I’m not trying to add complexity, so I’ll just ask anyone familiar with the new PSU standards whether buying an ATX 3.0 unit would make my current setup seem outdated—like using the ASRock Z690 Steel Legend we’re planning to use in our next PC. Would that be a problem?
A good 400+W option is available. No need for ATX3.0 when it comes to this setup. Tier A or B listed at the link provided.
