I prefer not to invest real money, just using it for cards, selling them and buying more to make badges, right?

It makes it seem like you're investing in cards, but that's not the situation. Focusing on trading and selling is the right approach.

Someone is asking about the purpose behind these virtual cards and whether they are treated like collectibles. The person is curious about their value and the reasons behind collecting them.

Many people buy these cards, especially since 94,000 were sold in one day. It’s fun for me because I enjoy progressing, gathering items, and having specific collectibles like the To the Moon & Foil badges. I can even make money from trading them. I recently got a rare piece for crafting the Foil badge in the Steam Summer Adventure, which now sells for around $0.50—though it was worth $3.50 once and has risen. I plan to keep it until it becomes extremely valuable before selling. While some collectors might find these cards less useful, they’re just like ours; we both can turn them into cash. A few work well in certain games (like Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokémon), but those games aren’t great anyway. The main difference is that these are digital, so losing them would be more serious than with physical cards. I wouldn’t mind losing everything if Steam ever shut down completely.

I get why people enjoy them. The main point is that physical trading cards aren’t part of your game stats or provide in-game items you couldn’t get otherwise. They just exist as separate objects.

... Who collects trading cards to look at them? (This is a semi-joke because I know people do, but I can't understand why. Just like you can't understand why I collect them, at least at this point.) I mean really, if I don't get something I care about from trading cards (I don't care about the cards themselves), then I wouldn't do it. I get a level from collecting these trading cards. You could say it's pure e-peen, but I never level for that reason. I love JRPG's. The only thing more synonymous with grinding than JRPG's is Korean MMO. So, I love grinding by the transitive property of algebra (yay math). Some people don't get how someone can enjoy grinding, but I do. This is grinding for me, plus I get cool badges for my profile for games I like (as I said), and I get other stuff too. Basically, you use the cards to craft badges for games. When you do that, the cards are gone. So you lose them but gain the badge and 3 items (or 5, for a Foil badge). Those 3 items are usually a Steam Profile background, a chat emote, and some item for a game. Sometimes you get discounts on certain games (which expire sadly). Sometimes you get other rare things. Some games have in game items you can get though. Warframe, Realm of the Mad God, Team Fortress 2 (pretty much all Valve titles), and there are more that I probably don't know about. So yes, you can get items to actually use in games. I got a TF2 crate once. I got a Realm of the Mad God fishing pole thing once. Overall, most of it is about collection (like in Pokemon). Badges are what most people want the most often, with emotes/backgrounds the things they want least (most of the time, but it depends on the specific emote/background). In game items can sell for a looot. In fact, one Warframe item sells for $35. That would be sweet to get. So people rarely want the in game items, but when they get that one valuable one, they want those the most.
