I assembled my PC last year with an R5 3600 and a standard G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB DDR4 at 3200mhz. I considered expanding to 32GB RAM eventually, but since I don’t really need that much right now, I thought about upgrading to faster RAM, especially RGB options. I looked into the G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4, which is actually more affordable than I expected.

a) Will it automatically limit my CPU speed?
b) Should I opt for 4000mhz RAM with the idea of upgrading my CPU in a year or two, or keep RAM and upgrade later when a better CPU comes out? (I’m also hoping for a price drop on Black Friday.)
c) Should I wait for a CPU upgrade before investing in more RAM?
I have a B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC which seems compatible with Ryzen 7 and 9 series, though I think a PSU upgrade might be needed too.

There’s little gain from boosting performance with extra RAM speed like that. A 3600 MHz can sometimes struggle to maintain speeds above 3600MHz. The motherboard supports a maximum of 3466MHz.

I wasn’t aware the motherboard had a limit either. Unless I switch the motherboard, even if I change the CPU, sticking with a 3200 might still be okay.

You could potentially reach the 3466 limit with the right setup. Switching the CPU increases your odds, and Ryzen 5000 memory controllers perform significantly better.

The PSU needs replacing. There are three parts to upgrade: motherboard, CPU, and PSU. Think of options like a 5600X, B550-F, and RMA 750 or 650.
