Discussing RAM choices for a motherboard upgrade
I recently chose to replace the mainboard in my desktop computer. During the process, I got an MSI Z97 MPower Max AC in excellent shape, still in its original packaging with all the necessary accessories, just like new. It came with an Intel Confidential 4770k CPU. This board represents a significant technological advancement compared to the current Alienware X58 triple channel memory board with an i7-990X in my XPS 730X. The RAM options available for this model are quite extensive and may be challenging to choose from. For my budget, I’m aiming for a used RAM package under $150-200 that suits my requirements. I understand I don’t need top-tier performance RAM, so a mid-range option would suffice. I’ve also heard about potential latency problems with faster RAM speeds. The memory details are as follows: it supports four DDR3 slots and can handle up to 32GB. It uses DDR3 speeds from 3200 to 2133 MHz, operates in dual-channel architecture, and doesn’t require ECC or buffering. It also complies with Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP). My existing graphics are two high-end Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 cards running SLI. The storage is a 1TB Samsung 860 EVO drive, and the new board supports an M.2 card. It comes with Seasonic Platnimum Prime 1200 watt power supply. The desktop is used for everyday tasks like browsing the web and light gaming, not for video editing or large file handling. With a stronger motherboard and CPU, I plan to improve my gaming experience only as much as my skills allow. If you need more details, feel free to ask. The suggestion and advice board is available...
My computer uses an Asus Z97a board with 8 gigabytes of 2133 MHz RAM. I’m not sure about the specific timings, but I think it’s a bit low. Browsing feels slow even when I run games or apps. Still, 8 gigabytes of DDR3 works just fine in 2022. I wonder if DDR3 prices are expensive now and it might be tough to find them. My goal is to upgrade to 16 gigabytes of 2133 MHz in dual channel. Two 8-gigabyte sticks should work, and I’d like to source from the same manufacturer.
I own a 4770k and 4790k (4.6ghz OC), and recently upgraded to an X58/X5650 (4.4ghz OC). Personally, the leap from 990x to 4770k isn’t enough for noticeable single-thread gains or multicore benefits. Switching platforms without a clear future seems risky, especially with your LGA1150 setup. With 12GB of DDR3, you probably have either three 4GB modules or six 2GB modules in your older builds. I’d consider swapping out just the current 8GB into the Z97 to test performance first. If you’re satisfied with the results, a budget 16GB dual-channel setup around 1600MHz at 9.0GHz could work well. You can find used DDR3 at reasonable prices—there’s even over 64GB available in local listings!
