I realized I didn't overwork my wife's processor but instead swapped her setup (she needed a new GPU anyway). This gives me a decision between my i7-9700f and her i7-8700k. My system already has a custom water cooling setup with two 240mm x 15mm radiators.

The results depend on your specific needs. For tasks that require fast clock speeds, an overclocked 8700K running at 5GHz with all cores will outperform the 4.5GHz all-core boost of the 9700F. If your workload focuses on core or thread count, the two will compete differently, since the 8700K offers 6 cores but 12 threads, making it more versatile for certain scenarios.

YoungBlade has a point, but overall I don't believe the distinction matters much. For me, it comes down to whether you enjoy working with it or not. Choosing the 9700f at full speed would also be more energy-efficient.
