DDR4 and DDR3 models don’t work together. Using DDR3 won’t fit in your laptop, while DDR4 should function but will limit performance to the slowest RAM module. It’s usually better to install a single high-speed 16 gigabit DIMM instead of mixing slow and fast ones.

Other concerns about compatibility were noted, but merging a 16 GB and a 4 GB stick results in only four of the sixteen gigabytes operating in dual-channel while the remaining four stay single-channel. This means performance improvements are limited to certain parts of your RAM setup, only if the extra stick doesn’t have lower speeds causing the other to lag. Also, mixing DDR3 and 4 GB is not possible.

Understood. I appreciate the clarification. I’m still a bit confused about DDR compatibility, but that’s what learning is about.
