Discussing Intel 4690k overclocking
Hi, I'm trying to boost the CPU speed on my 4690k with a Deepcool Captain 240mm AIO. At stock voltage it runs smoothly around 4.1GHz, but pushing it to 4.2GHz causes it to overheat quickly reaching 100°C. At 4.1 it stays stable near 80°C. I noticed that jumping to higher voltages like 4.5 with 1.3V also leads to temperatures above 100°C. Why does 100MHz cause such a big spike? I can try even higher voltages but it gets too hot. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Even minor overheating makes the board act more aggressively, increasing power delivery and forcing the CPU to work harder. If your silicon lottery didn’t work, you won’t be able to overclock much without raising voltage too high. I wouldn’t suggest pushing further unless your cooler can handle it.
Is the motherboard using auto-voltage? That usually pushes the voltage up more than needed, especially at higher clocks. A manually adjusted setting might be better. If not, liquid metal and desiccant can make a big difference.
This idea seems logical, I'll try increasing the clock speed and just tweak the voltage slightly. If it doesn't work, I'll settle for 4.1. Thanks a lot for the advice!
I was running Auto, which likely caused it to reach 100 at 4.2. I'm trying to experiment with the voltage to lower it while maintaining the same clocks.
