my current cpu-memory-storage-mobo combination is not enough for me any more (i am mainly video editing and from time to time 3d rendering) i am planning to get a 5080 or if i could afford it a 5090 when they will came out since i can't find 4080's and 4090's in my region anymore for some odd reason the prices of the 7800X3D didn't sky rocket here and i can still get it for around 360$ i wanted a 7950X3D cause in my use case the extra cores will be helpful but i thought about that and i think a 7800X3D will be good enough about the mobo, i can only find asus tuf boards at the moment (B650, X670 and X670E) i don't need PCIe gen 5 support cause for my use case Gen 4 is enough, however i thought it might be worth it to wait for cheaper (and probably better) boards from gigabyte or msi (i don't want to deal with the RMA issues) as for the RAM i wanted 128GB or at least 64 cause my work will benefit from those overkill amounts of RAM 6000MT/s is enough but i am not sure about the CL rating i think the lowest i can get is 36, if not i can get a 5600MT/s kit with a CL rating of 30. RBG is not a priority i need quite a lot of storage (and i need it to be fast) but i also don't want to spend too much on it i think 8TB of NVMe storage is the sweet spot for me (only for gaming it's totally overkill i know) but i will probably start with 4TB and add more later cause i do want to save some money i thought about getting the Samsung 990 evo, 980 Pro or maybe the WD black SN850x
What RMA concerns exist? I own the ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI and have successfully integrated it into more than 20 AM5 configurations without issues. Keep in mind that AM5/Ryzen 7000 systems generally don’t support multiple RAM sticks, so consider pairing with two 48GB DDR5 modules if you need XMP/EXPO support. For video editing, a 7950X might be more beneficial compared to the 7800X3D or 7950X3D. The 7950X will outperform the 7800X3D while remaining a solid gaming option.
You didn't note cooling concerns. A good air cooler can help the 7950x The X3D CPU stay cooler than the non-X3D models because of its stacked cache. The 7800X3D should be cooler than the 7950x.
I believed it would be clear given how I mentioned it in past discussions, so maybe I should have been more precise.
Sure? I won’t scroll through all your past messages just to confirm anything. If I did, I don’t recall responding much. For now, a 7800X3D seems like the top choice for you. I’ve tried the ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI in several configurations, even with 7800X3D and 7950X3D, and it performed well. I’m using the board now and expect to upgrade to the 9800X3D later. Avoid getting four RAM sticks—Ryzen 7000 models don’t handle that. That’s why we’re seeing more 2x48 and 2x64GB sticks for DDR5.
I recently switched to a 2x48GB configuration from G.skill (optimized for 6400MHz CL32 at 1.35V), and it’s performed exceptionally well so far. I’m currently conducting stress tests at 6200MHz CL30 with tighter timings, inspired by a Buildzoid/Actually Hardcore Overclocking video on a 2X48GB Corsair setup. For memory needs, staying under 500GB is ideal for most 128GB kits, making a 2x48GB setup a balanced choice. The kit I received is a G. SKILL Trident Z Royal, which is on the pricier side but offers top-tier performance. For rendering, maximizing RAM capacity is key—running Flux again made it worthwhile, especially since a 2x32GB would still leave me short. I’m eyeing a future upgrade to a 9950X3D and an Asus X870E-e Strix board once those CPUs arrive. The choice of board matters: three M.2 coolers instead of one reduces heat buildup and keeps components cooler, especially when the drive under the larger heatsink stays 6-9°C cooler than others. This setup should help my drive temps and let me install all five M.2 drives simultaneously, though it means sacrificing the X16 slot speed to 5.0 x8. This should suit your workload expectations. Let me know if you need more details!
