Hey everyone! I just purchased an HP ProDesk 400 G5 SFF from eBay (I3 8100, 8GB, 256GB SSD) and am setting it up as a server or homelab. I'm thinking about hardware improvements, but I'm having trouble determining if the 9th generation is compatible. Any advice or info on this?

I understand, but it's an OEM which means there is a solid chance that 9th gen just won't work. Not saying don't try, just that you shouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work. I've even had towers that somehow locked out i7's in the same generation. Yeah, you'd think that would matter. But it *really* doesn't move the needle much. Seriously. Look at reviews from the time. It's about 5% difference. Ultimately, if you have a friend who can lend you a 9th gen chip, give it a go, I'd be curious. But an 8700k is currently selling for 90$ on ebay, while 9700ks are going for 110. To me a 20% cost increase isn't worth a 3-6% performance uplift.
if you're referring to gaming, then it makes sense why the performance boost would be limited. i’ll look for something that’s been used by people who accept returns. if i ever have the budget to upgrade and switch to a 9th generation system, i’d consider a 9900k, as it’s likely the best option compared to the 8700k (the top of its line). alternatively, a piece of memorabilia from the 8086k could be worth considering.
You’re planning to set up a homelab or server, but it seems you’re not sure what specific services or applications you want to run. Also, you mentioned needing less RAM than you currently have for a NAS setup.
