My second machine has been reliable for over a decade, running an Intel i5-2400 processor, an Asus P8P67 motherboard, an AMD 580 GPU, and several storage options including SSDs and a high-end HD card. It’s powered by a Soundblaster 64 with a 500W PSU and supports both Windows and Linux Mint versions. I’m considering a final upgrade and have a few processor options in mind. The first option is an Intel i5-3570K – a 3rd-gen chip with PCIe 3.0, drawing around 65 watts, and available for about $40 on AliExpress. The second choice is the Intel i7-2600K, a 2nd-gen CPU with hyperthreading, offering up to 8 cores and consuming roughly 95 watts; it’s priced around $46 on AliExpress. The third is the Intel i7-3770K, the top model compatible with my motherboard, delivering 4 cores with hyperthreading, drawing about 65 watts, but costing $104 on AliExpress. My system mainly handles light gaming, file backups, music emulation, and media playback, so I’m curious if anyone has used these upgrades successfully. Only the 3770K upgrade holds real value, yet a $100 purchase can easily surpass an Intel 3rd gen processor. A complete 12100 upgrade costs just $260 and offers significantly better performance than this setup. Thanks for the ideas—sadly the suggested board isn’t PCI compatible, meaning I’d need to swap out the SoundBlaster 64, which I’m using with third-party KX drivers for ASIO MIDI setups. Also, upgrading the motherboard can be tricky; Windows 7 sometimes causes major crashes and may need a full reinstall after big changes, especially with many third-party drivers and post-Win 7 security patches already installed. Appreciate the advice—this is something I’m considering for my mother-in-law’s setup.
The price of $104 seems excessive for a 3770K. In Finland, you can even find a 3770K with a Z77+16GB RAM for less than 50€. How much more affordable is the non-K model? Even with the multiplier fixed, you can increase it to 4, raising it from 39-39-38-37 to 43-43-42-41.
