Both ideas you mentioned are correct. I wouldn’t suggest purchasing Windows directly from Microsoft, as there are more affordable options available. However, some sites offer discounts, but due to forum guidelines I’m uncertain about sharing them here. All these sources send you a key that works with the installer downloaded straight from Microsoft.
