For the power supply, I’m thinking about adding an extra 100w.
Regarding the monitor, I’m not sure yet. I already have two that are working well for years, and upgrading to a bigger one is possible, though it depends on how much I can invest in other parts. I’ve had good experiences with both Acer and Asus monitors before.
I don’t have a fixed budget, and my location is the US. I mainly bought from Newegg, but I’m open to better recommendations. I’d aim for around 1500-1700, though I’m flexible if it fits better. Still, if I could save without too much loss, that would be ideal.
One thing that’s unclear is whether the 14900K really stands out. It seems impressive compared to the 14900KS on Intel and AMD CPUs, but some videos seem to criticize it heavily without clear reasons. Overall, I’d prefer not to settle for just average right now, but to choose something that lasts longer than similar models in its category. For instance, the 1070ti and 1080ti GPUs were top choices and remained relevant for a long time.
The minor distinctions between the i7s and i9s in single-core performance don’t justify the added expense unless you require the additional e-cores found in the i9s. For gaming, having e-cores offers no real advantage, making extra ones unnecessary. The i9s also present greater cooling challenges when under stress compared to the i7s. I’d consider reviewing @Why_Me’s setup without a monitor due to budget limits. You can upgrade your monitor later, and waiting longer usually improves quality or reduces costs. Here’s a more customized configuration for you.
The criticism mainly comes from the observation that it doesn’t significantly outperform a 13900k yet uses more power. The only 14th generation model I’d think is worth considering is a 14700k. I agree with the earlier suggestion about the 7800x3d. It tends to run faster in games, and AM5 provides a better upgrade route compared to LGA 1700. It consumes less power and is more affordable. Unless you require Nvidia’s specific features, a 7900xt offers a bit more speed and cost savings than a 4070ti super. I understand your strong preference for Intel, but I wanted to mention this option too.
I’ve put in effort to review all the suggestions so far, and it has certainly improved my decision-making process. I still don’t have a complete list, but it’s getting closer.
I’d like to talk about one more point before finalizing the build, which is the CPU.
In the past, I’ve been disappointed by AMD’s claims of strong performance; in reality, they fall short compared to Intel, especially when it comes to single-threaded speed—a factor that matters most for gaming if other aspects like memory and GPU are optimized well.
I’ve reviewed many articles and sources, and at one point I almost chose the 7800X3D, but now I’m leaning toward the 14700K. The big difference in power consumption and its effects is clear, and while the 7800 still delivers solid frame rates in most games, it doesn’t meet my top priorities.
Also, the prices for both the 14700K and 7800X3D are almost the same right now, usually hovering around $400. It really depends on the day and offers, so I treat them similarly without focusing too much on the upgrade paths or specific RAM needs for Intel.
