I just observed how Minecraft outperforms other titles in terms of performance. While watching vanilla Minecraft with shaders, my GPU fans sped up noticeably. I checked my temperatures and thermal readings, comparing them to more demanding games. It’s surprising how much power Minecraft consumes. Even the 3DMark Steel Nomad benchmark didn’t match its demands. Here are some figures: ambient room temperature is around 31°C, all data comes from hardware logs and averages. Minecraft achieved a render distance of about 16 chunks, with shaders at maximum settings. The GPU stayed near 66°C, CPU around 80°C, and the TBP reached roughly 270W. Cyberpunk 2077 under heavy ray tracing with FSR3 hit similar levels. My system used a Ryzen 7 5700X, RX 7700XT, 12GB of OC memory, 32GB DDR4 RAM at 3200MHz, paired with a Ryzen Master Hyper 212 processor, an EVGA G+ graphics card, and a 650W power supply. The front glass cooling solution helped maintain airflow. These numbers show just how intense Minecraft can be, even though the temperatures stay within safe limits. I’m curious about your thoughts on this and appreciate any insights you might have.

Your GPU utilization appears high across the three games and benchmarks, with a reported 350W compared to the expected 270W. The clock speed is likely running at full capacity during these sessions.

Do you have V-Sync or VRR enabled? If the games are set for unlimited frame rates, especially on easier titles, they can push beyond the maximum possible frames, forcing the GPU/CPU to work harder than at a capped rate. Capping Minecraft’s frame rate to match your monitor’s refresh rate should help reduce heat during play.

I had to restart the tests because I hadn't recorded usage in HWInfo. Minecraft: GPU clock around 2700MHz with about 99% CPU usage, CPU clock near 4.32GHz and roughly 27% utilization, Cyberpunk 2077: GPU clock similar at 2700MHz with ~90% CPU load and ~54% usage, 3DMark Steel Nomad: GPU clock hovered near 2600MHz often dropping to 2500MHz but never did so during full CPU load (the percentages reflect actual app usage, not total), and CPU clock stayed steady at 4.65GHz even with around 10% usage.

I tested all three settings—144Hz V-sync in-game, freesync, and unlocking FPS. The results were consistent. This is odd because both Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at higher FPS than Minecraft with unlimited FPS, which was erratic, dropping to 80 and 120. I added a note about the thermal tests using unlimited FPS on both games. Edit 2: The in-game FPS cap actually changed, so Minecraft didn’t limit my FPS when I set it to 140, even though it was unstable. Now it’s running at 138FPS, but the temperatures are still above other titles; it’s still better than average and above 3DMark’s standards for Cyberpunk 2077.
