Discrepancy over RTX4090 compatibility with fiber optic HDMI connections
I bought a RTX4090 mainly for professional use, but also wanted to enjoy gaming on it via my TV, which supports 4K at 120Hz (Samsung QN90B). To connect from my PC in the office to the TV I used a 10-meter cable. I chose an active HDMI cable and kept my DP cable connected. At first everything seemed fine—both screens displayed properly and the TV functioned as a secondary monitor. But when adjusting resolution, switching display settings, or enabling game mode on the TV, the images would disappear, turning black, until I had to restart the PC. This happened with both displays.
I checked the product page and found an option to set refresh rate to 120Hz in display settings and Nvidia control panel. My monitor is 3840x1200, which is close to the 4090’s max of 7680x3360—though I should confirm if that’s accurate. I removed the monitor and still faced the same issue; it would lose signal whenever I changed graphics settings. When I switched to a regular passive HDMI cable, it worked at 60Hz but not at 120Hz.
I returned the cable to Amazon and looked into other options, including a Richer Sounds optical HDMI 10m cable. However, the same problems continued, and it didn’t let me boost refresh rate to 120Hz in either menu. Have others had similar experiences with 40-series cards? I noticed past compatibility concerns between these fiber optic cables and 30-series graphics cards, so maybe this isn’t fully resolved for 40-series models. Could the issue lie with the driver? I’m using the latest gaming drivers, but someone suggested a Balkun conversion kit—maybe switching to Ethernet and back would help avoid interference.
Any tips or alternatives would be appreciated, Josh.
