We recently received 500mbps fiber with BT installed. Previously, we relied on powerline for around 50-60mbps over copper wiring, but now using the same adapters only gives 50-100mbps. Connecting directly to the router delivers the full speed. It’s unclear why this difference occurs and how to resolve it.

The powerline connection isn't a sure thing and relies heavily on the wiring inside walls. Also, verify your specific model—most claim up to 600Mbps but only offer 100Mbps ports, so you won’t exceed that.

Powerline is also impacted by "dirty power." We handle it regularly.

This reason is that they offer 100Mbps ports (fast Ethernet). The claims of 600Mbps are misleading since physical ports limit speeds to 100Mbps. To achieve higher speeds you'd need a powerline solution with gigabit ports.

It largely depends on your home setup if you can easily install wired Ethernet (for example, by drilling a small hole in the ceiling and running the cable through the attic). The next best choice would be ensuring the powerline functions properly, which might involve using a different outlet farther from switches, appliances, and similar devices. If wiring isn't feasible and the powerline remains unreliable, it could be time to consider upgrading to Wi-Fi.
