Starrt8 by stardock is the top choice! I've tested the others, they're okay but far from great.

No worries! You can launch it straight to your desktop, though removing Metro isn’t possible. It won’t be done.

Classic shells seem to offer the best free choice. However, I've faced some bothersome issues with them. Start8 also makes Windows 8/8.1 behave similarly to Windows 7. The interfaces are almost indistinguishable.

I don't know the answer right now, since I don't recall the features of classic shell. I remember a friend using classic shell on his laptop, which would disappear from the taskbar after a reboot. That suggests stability in Start8 is important? It's worth the 5 dollars and definitely worth it!
