Hi everyone! My home-server is on W11 with most components turned off for efficiency. The drives are set to shut down after 20 minutes. To conserve energy, I want it to power down at night. However, the wake-up triggers all the drives to come online. This causes unnecessary power use and wear. Any suggestions to prevent that while still saving power and reducing drive stress? Thanks!

Windows has to do this to verify if the storage is functional. If it gets no response the drive will be taken offline and seen as disconnected. This is a core windows behavior and can not and should not be altered

You could schedule it to power down on weekdays only, conserving the drive. For optimal timing, look into settings that let you define wake-up and sleep times precisely.

Drives can operate for 100,000 hours without problems. The main wear comes from frequent spinning up and down. The sleep cycles you choose (s0 to s3) let you rely on built-in timing or use external methods like Wake-on-LAN for activation.

It’s the start-stop wear that worries me the most, which is why I was hoping to avoid waking up during the night.

In any case, unless you damage these drives, they should last more than five years.

Ensure the drives remain operational without slowing down. Expect around 7 watts per drive, avoiding additional wear from frequent spinning.

It delivers a significant amount of strength. Right now, my machine runs at 25 watts with an i5 10400, 16GB DDR4, 8TB WD Purple, and multiple WD storage drives.

Remove the five drives and swap them for an affordable 18TB Toshiba and Seagate unit available for 280.- You might also consider selling them used if you're skilled at wiping data. It could be a simple 100.-

Avoid relying on one source of failure. They tend to break more often.
