Windows 7 is no longer available for purchase and won’t receive any updates, including important libraries like DirectX 12. The situation mirrors what happened with XP after Vista arrived. An unofficial port might be attempted, but it won’t match the stability of Windows 10.

Windows 7 lacks compatibility with DirectX 12, yet it supports Vulkan. Both technologies aim to enhance graphics performance by improving communication between hardware and drivers. DirectX 12 is exclusive to Microsoft and only works on Windows 10, whereas Vulkan is open-source and managed by The Khronos Group, available across multiple platforms including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, Linux, and Android. Several developers and engines use Vulkan, such as Epic Games (Unreal 4), Unity (Unity 5), Valve (Source 2), DICE (FrostBite), CroTeam (Serious Engine 4), id Software (id Tech 6), Crytek (Cry Engine V), and Cloud Imperium Games (Star Citizen). It's uncertain which standard will prevail, as adoption is still limited. Some studios, like Valve, may focus on Vulkan, while many engines support both Vulkan and DirectX 12. Vulkan offers strong cross-platform and open-source benefits, while DirectX 12 could appeal to developers targeting newer Xbox hardware that supports it.
