Direct connect LAN without internet?
I intend to run Command & Conquer: Generals offline on my own machine with a friend. We both have Windows XP and the same game version. We have a router and/or modem (uncertain) plus two Ethernet cables. Can we really set up LAN with such basic equipment? The modem or router is just an older Exede model.
Yes, as long as you're both on the same subnet and the game supports LAN and has no Internet required to play it should work. You just need the router.
Based on your setup, you might connect directly P2P and skip the router, though a router simplifies things with DHCP and similar features. If you don’t have one nearby, it’s still feasible to proceed.
