Digital display with small pixel dots
For a while now, while watching TV, the picture becomes blurry for a short time before returning to normal (still not great, but acceptable). I use the official app from my TV provider on my Apple TV 4K (model A2843). My internet setup includes: Eurodocsis 3.1 (modem required by my service) → Cat 7 → two gigabit switches → Cat 6 → Linksys EA8300 as an access point → Cat 6 → Apple TV. The issue worsens during busy network periods and also shows up when only a few devices send telemetry data. I can stream 4K movies from my NAS in the basement to the living room TV without any problems. The modem’s settings section lacks QoS options. Could there be a solution? Thanks ahead!
Have you tried removing factors such as connecting the TV directly to the modem, shortening its path to the modem, or switching off other gadgets?
Because of Docsis service, it might be an overloaded node. This means many users in that area are connected at once, which can affect performance. It seems like the issue stems from your provider rather than a network overload. You mentioned problems with internet drops? Also, you’re curious about European TV. In the US, we have free Over-the-Air channels via antenna or cable/satellite, but cable and satellite companies also offer OTA channels by paying for the stations. I’m bringing this up since OTA TV isn’t very consistent. Even with cable, I’ve noticed those channels sometimes cut out.
I don't have a practical solution to directly connect my Apple TV to my modem (I don't have an ethernet cable that's long enough to cover the distance between my living room and the modem in my basement). I did however turned off al other devices on my local network off, which didn't help. Thanks for the suggestion! My internet is stable (I get the promised maximum speed by my provider, no packet loss and a stable ping between 10 and 20 ms when pinging to google.com). In my country (Belgium), until recently, the TV signal was streamed using Coax to 99% of the population. The other 1% is satellite (people living in more remote area's of the country). We're not allowed anymore to install antenna's on our homes (and even if we did, there's no signal to capture anymore; it's been killed off somewhere in the '90's). Nowadays, almost all TV signal is streamed over internet (mostly fiber connections, some Ethernet). The coax signal was stable and delivered reasonable quality (1080p on all channels with an ok image quality). The new internet-based solution seems to throttle very quickly... Thanks for your help!
It might depend on your service's stability. I've seen live TV streaming over the internet sometimes fail. Netflix experienced problems during a major boxing event. You might want to contact your provider. It could be a recognized problem or they may have overlooked some solutions.
