I'm comparing two options for your Asus motherboard: X299 and Z490. The key difference lies in their chipset designs, which affect performance and reliability. From a speed and stability standpoint, the Z490 generally offers better results, especially for gaming and demanding tasks.
It looks like the CPU socket differs from what was mentioned earlier, which changes the options available. Typically, X series chipsets are designed for high-core-count processors, though they may not match the newest features found in Z series chipsets when comparing the latest versions.
Avoid shopping around for these models—Z299 doesn’t offer much advantage over Z490. Z490’s processors are significantly faster. If you were considering Z299, stick with AMD unless you needed Intel’s reliability and uptime assurances. Based on my experience with thousands of setups, it’s not a major issue. In short, I’d pick Z490 for Intel or go with AMD.
I also looked up and it seems there isn't an i9 core Extreme compatible with the Z490 chipsets... that's surprising.
Perhaps it's the varying interfaces? A lot of factors come into play. One runs on an entirely separate system. Intel's consumer lineup isn't the same as its am HEDT offerings. They vary significantly in design and function. The 10th gen HEDT excels with AVX 512 support and quad channels, catering to different needs.
Thanks. It's been more than ten years since this game started, so I'm trying to get back up to speed. People keep saying the Z490 is the best option now because of its memory speed locking. However, it looks like the Z490 came out in 2020 while the X299 was released in 2017—definitely a newer model. I'm puzzled why there isn't a core Extreme version for the Z490.
That's because this is a consumer platform. That would be h and b series Intel board. Not z series. Zen 2 is also a great platform. Currently AMD is leading and they do have compelling options. Zen 3 will come out later this year and will be a serious upgrade.
I understand this discussion is from a while back, yet it seems few talked about the Pcie lane distinction between enthusiast and consumer builds. For instance, the Core i9-10850KA offers 16 lanes, whereas the Core i9-10900X provides 48 lanes—differing by roughly $100 on Newegg. When examining storage choices, this gap becomes noticeable. An example is the ASRock X299 CREATOR LGA 2066 board supporting RAID 0 across three M.2 slots (12 lanes) plus your graphics card and a 10 Gbps network adapter (which typically uses 4 lanes). That’s a total of at least 32 lanes, or double what the i9-10850KA can handle. The non-threadripper CPUs don’t see much improvement either—like the Ryzen 9 3900XT with 24 lanes, but only 4 dedicated to the chipset. I’m curious about how enthusiast CPUs in Intel’s 11th gen line look, especially regarding Pcie version 4 support.
