I previously owned an R9 290 and faced issues launching the OS with the AMD GPU driver, preventing Vulkan and DXVK from working. The installed kernel (5.8) only supported up to Kernel 5.4. Now I’m using an R9 280 and tried switching to Vulkan and AMDGPU, achieving partial success—99% functionality with some games still failing. I’ve managed to install Vulkan and DVVK but encountered errors related to kernel version mismatches and driver incompatibility. The AMD drivers don’t support my current kernel, which is confusing. I’m unsure whether the GPU ID or device type needs adjustment. Overall, it’s a mixed experience, and I’m weighing options between continuing with Manjaro or trying a fresh install.

5.4 is the stable version of the kernel. I tend to skip the newest releases unless they offer features like improved networking performance. When comparing kernels, you might be able to recompile and tweak them so the driver functions properly. However, I’m not able to walk you through that myself. I usually simplify things to boost efficiency. On my machine, I have a 280 card running Linux Mint 20.1 with the 5.4 kernel. It’s mostly used for backup purposes; the drivers perform well without much gaming involved.

Recently, many GPUs and AMD chips have experienced instability over the past few years.

Graphics cards from GCN 4.0 were typically the preferred choice (mainly the RX 580), but it wouldn't be surprising if they moved toward a RDNA 2 GPU, such as an RX 6500 XT, when future GPUs become more commonplace.

I only saw this part, since you asked what's going on. I run a 290X with AMD GPU and kernel 5.10.

I'm gradually getting the hang of all this stuff and let the 5.8 update pass before figuring out exactly what it did compared to the LTS version. It's good to know it's functioning properly with 5.4, though I'm still pretty new to Linux and depend on guides to fix problems... If you can spot anything that helps, it would be really appreciated.

Updated the kernel to "5.10.9-051009-generic" using the provided guide. Followed the original instructions for blacklisting and configuring grub, but it still isn't working. Checked the version details with uname -r and lsb_release. No available LSB modules detected. Distributor ID: Pop. Description: Pop!_OS 20.10 Release: 20.10 Codename: groovy glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" OpenGL renderer string: AMD TAHITI (DRM 2.50.0, 5.10.9-051009-generic, LLVM 10.0.0). Another suggestion was to visit https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME.
