Hello guys,
I recently upgraded my old X2 with 4GB RAM to a 2 x 8GB configuration. Everything functioned properly until I noticed the new RAM was extremely slow—around 3000 MHz, but it was running at 21xx. I went into BIOS and adjusted the XMP profile to 3k. After saving and exiting BIOS, the PC started up, but the GPU failed to respond. I tried everything, even resting the CMOS battery for an hour, which didn’t help. My CPU doesn’t have an integrated GPU. A few years ago, I upgraded from an A10 to an R5 3600, so I need to update the BIOS to ensure my new CPU works. The motherboard is an ASRock A320M-DGS. If I’m right, I can’t revert to my old APU—what options do I have?
I recommend using the clear CMOS jumper on the motherboard and adhering to the manual's guidance if you're unsure about the steps. When the GPU fails to activate, it usually indicates that the DRAM timings or clocks aren't functioning properly, causing the system to remain inactive until the memory settings are restored.
Also, insert the old RAM and verify functionality. There might be several problems, but it's useful to confirm your complete specifications.
I mean that every time the PC turns on, the PSU fan starts first, then the CPU, and finally the GPU. It didn’t happen before.
Edit. Clearing CMOS worked somehow, but using a single stick of old RAM caused an issue. After the first boot, I replaced two sticks and it worked.
Can you explain how this is different from getting a battery?
Lastly, what’s the best way to get better performance with my new RAM? I lose some speed compared to the 21xx model, but this RAM is rated for 3000. I really want that, but I don’t want to risk damaging my PC again!

Typically pulling the battery will work fine, but sometimes depending on components you have to power off and disconnect everything then hit the power button to ensure drain. If the motherboard manufacturer has a jumper for resetting CMOS and instructions on how to do it I always do that instead of pulling the battery. It's the one way guaranteed to always work on a functioning board.
It could be something with the timings that the CPU doesn't like, or even an issue relating to the board as that's first gen Ryzen. If you want better memory performance your choices are likely to be manually tuning the memory speed and timings or purchasing a whole new kit of memory.
