Did the MSI RTX 5090 GAMING TRIO OC suffer from a burnt adapter and discolored or charred pins?
Hello everyone.
Lately my PC has been crashing frequently, and it turns out the issue was caused by the MSI adapter I used—it burned out. This led to discoloration or charring on the top pins of the GPU power connector where the adapter was damaged.
After using the 12VHPWR cable from my PSU (which I should have used earlier), everything is working properly. I stress-tested the card with tools like memtest and 3DMark, and it performed as expected for the first few months.
Some additional details: I purchased the card on June 2nd, 2025. After July, I began noticing minor crashes, which I didn’t link to a GPU problem. From September to October, and especially in early November, these crashes increased in frequency, with one crash even occurring under any GPU load.
My PSU is the Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 13 1600W (multi-rail mode), and my GPU is the MSI RTX 5090 GAMING TRIO OC. If you need more information about my system specs, just let me know. I haven’t overclocked it myself.
My question is: can I request an RMA? I’m still within the warranty period, but InfoQuest (the MSI partner handling RMA in Greece) hasn’t confirmed if they cover this issue under warranty. They only suggest sending it to them for testing. MSI mentioned in my ticket that I should proceed with the RMA process. Have others had similar problems and received approval? The only online info I found is that Nvidia instructed partners to approve these requests after the 40-series issues. Please share your thoughts and any advice you might have—I appreciate it!
My inquiry is whether I can request an RMA. I plan to reach out to MSI to update them on the situation and explain what happened, keeping in mind that we're still within the warranty period.
To be clear, damages caused by the user are not covered under warranty; only hardware failures are. If you're confident your 12VHPWR or 12v-2x6 connector was properly seated without any interference, then this isn't a user error.
Please remember to capture images of the damage or burn marks, as they will assist in their investigation if needed.
I received pictures of the burned adapter and the discolored GPU connector pins. Both MSI and InfoQuest were contacted, with MSI advising to continue and that's all they covered. Under the local partner, InfoQuest informed me they need to perform tests before proceeding, then discuss possible next steps.
Share MSI's contact with your GPU seller to check if it speeds up the RMA process.
I have already tried, they didn’t seem very interested, just said we should still check and test the card before moving forward. Can I file an RMA claim with MSI directly or through NVIDIA if the local partner isn’t able to assist? Do you think so?
