I assembled a computer for a friend and double-checked it was functioning properly. She resides in Fresno, California, while I’m based in Phoenix, Arizona. I traveled there and handed her the machine, removed the GPU, and took steps to ensure it arrived in good shape. She experienced crashes with Valorant, which we resolved. However, after switching to Overwatch, Fortnite, and Fall Guys, performance dropped. Her internet connection is unreliable, possibly contributing to the problem. The keyboard relies on arrow keys instead of shortcuts, and her headset audio is distorted—likely due to a faulty splitter, as it’s an older device with a built-in mic and 3.5mm jack. We’ve attempted nearly every troubleshooting method: replaced RAM and GPU, factory reset the PC, reinstalled drivers, and adjusted some hidden settings. Despite confirming hardware integrity (except the GPU), nothing seems to work. I’m considering updating the BIOS as a last resort, though I’m unsure what else might help. There were also fan RGB issues; I managed to change colors before delivery but faced problems afterward. I made sure power levels stayed stable, but now I’m uncertain. The person using the PC isn’t tech-savvy, so she lacks the knowledge to fix things. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Specs: Ryzen 7 3800X, RTX 3060, Zotac 12GB/16GB, Corsair Vengeance CL16, DDR4 3200MHz, ASUS B450F motherboard, EVGA 500W power supply, non-modular case from SkyTech.

From the start, the power supply seems significantly lower than what Zotac suggests, particularly when paired with a high-performance CPU such as a 3800X. The suggested power rating is 600W. It’s also worth noting that you didn’t mention the specific PSU model—choosing the right one is crucial. You might want to replace it with your existing unit? If you’re upgrading your system, consider a better PSU.

It’s an evga 500w PSU that isn’t modular, so she might try swapping it out if she finds it too tough. Everything works even when under heavy load. I’m unable to visit her directly as it’s nine hours away. The only concerns I see are the BIOS and the PSU itself. I suspect the problems she’s facing could stem from a weak internet connection. She uses a student Wi-Fi program with minimal downloads—about 1MB, plus 2-5MB upload—through Ethernet. That’s a minor Ethernet issue, but it might affect performance. She’s a beginner and doesn’t understand PC hardware well, so replacing the PSU may be out of her reach unless she decides to try. Updated August 9, 2022 by Maestro_RD2

First consider the PSU as some have mentioned; next verify the PCIe speeds by using gpu-z and observe the readings when under load—expect to see x16 on the top slot.

The performance is solid and everything appears okay. We won’t make any adjustments today; we aim to update the BIOS and motherboard drivers later. I’ll handle that update myself.
