Diagnose your home network issues
Hi, your network issues seem linked to cable length and placement. The fact that it takes time to establish a connection suggests the distance or quality might be affecting performance. Since you're using a longer 20m cable from the router to your PC, consider whether shorter or higher-quality cabling could improve stability. The living room setup with TV and strong Wi-Fi signals is good, but ensure the cables are secure and undamaged. If possible, test with shorter runs or better cables to see if that resolves the problem.
A low-cost cable might cause packet loss. Launch cmd on Windows to test your router. Swap 192.168.1.1 with your actual IP address and check for dropped packets after connecting. For better details, try using a tool like Gping.
How tidy is the setup? Avoid any tangles with power cords. If the cable is overly extended, keep it organized and steer clear of proximity to main wires. Inspect all connectors and ports for cleanliness and proper function.
I experienced no packet loss. The cable is brand new and extends from the router through the wall into the attic, reaching my room. There are no bends in the cable. The router itself is also brand new. I was switching providers, and before that there were no comparable problems. The technician suggested it might be due to the length. I don’t perceive this as an issue.
Could it be that when he connected the ends to the cable, something went wrong? From my perspective, that shouldn’t be the issue. If there’s a loose connection, there should be no signal or consistent problems. Thanks for your reply. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. I spoke with my provider about getting a new router, but I’m still debating the speed with them.
Hi, I've just received the new router. The same issue persists—it takes a long time to connect. We've tried using the same cable with the laptop, and it works fine without any problems. The motherboard is an MSI B450M Mortar. Could it be the Ethernet port on the board? The board has been half a year old and functioned properly with my previous provider. Please let me know if it's a software problem you can fix at home. I'm not dealing with hardware faults. Thanks!
