Good speed over a VPN depends on your needs, but generally aim for at least 5-10 Mbps for smooth streaming and browsing. Higher speeds are better for gaming or large file transfers.

You're often paired with OpenVPN, typically using a VM or a hypervisor host would be more effective. Platforms based on ARM or MIPS show limited speed. While some systems move IPSec to hardware, none currently handle OpenVPN as a router.

I understand, I could set up a VPN on my NAS, but it might take longer than I’d like. I don’t mind the type of VPN as long as it provides encryption.

I've been exploring this for some time. OpenBSD IPSec IKEDv2 VPN is worth checking out. https://www.openiked.org/ https://blog.gordonturner.com/2018/02/25...and-macos/ This setup works across various operating systems without needing a dedicated client—Android, iOS, and more are supported. OpenVPN is also a solid option; just ensure it's properly configured if you're experiencing slow data speeds.
