Routers help connect multiple devices to a network, directing data between them. They manage internet traffic, improve security, and allow you to access the web safely. Used for home or business connections, they simplify communication over long distances.

you only have a modem at home, but you’re using four smartphones via wifi and one ethernet cable connects to a switch linked to two computers. this setup suggests you want better performance or more stable connections. a router can help by managing multiple devices, improving speed, and providing a centralized network connection. it’s useful if you need faster internet, easier sharing of bandwidth, or if your current modem isn’t handling the load well. without a router, each device might experience slower speeds or interference from other networks.

It appears to be an all-in-one modem that also functions as a router, with wireless capabilities included.

it's a standard modem provided by the ISP, specifically from Telenet in Belgium. The model is 24x8 DOCS 3 Wireless (DOCSIS 3.0).

Routers help divide large broadcast areas into smaller sections. Networks connected to switches often send broadcast data frequently. When networks grow too big, this traffic becomes problematic, so we split them using subnetting and connect them with routers. Most homes and small businesses don’t need routers except for internet access. The internet forms one network, while the local network is another. Routers can also organize a business into departments or groups that require communication. The IP address and subnet mask reveal network size and boundaries, but this goes beyond your question. I tried to make it clearer.
