Hi, I recently purchased an HP P500 external SSD and set it up for macOS using the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system. This morning I attempted to copy a file from my internal SSD to this external drive, but the connection dropped during the process. Since then, I can't access any files on the external SSD. When I reconnect it, it appears again briefly—enough time to open a folder—but once opened, it freezes and becomes unusable. Any folder I try opens stalls at loading, and eventually the drive disconnects entirely. I suspect something triggered the issue, possibly when loading a particular file. If anyone has insights or can assist, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks ahead!

Have you verified whether the drive appears in a partition manager of your selection? It’s possible the drive was simply unmounted. You might attempt to mount it once more if needed.

Check the SATA controller or reinstall the SSD. Test the SSD on another machine to confirm the issue isn't specific.

The interface displays the status inside Disk Utility throughout the disconnection period. I plan to connect it to another Mac tomorrow, though it should be challenging since most of my friends use Windows laptops. The filesystem type is Mac OS Extended.

There might be a fix available. Others faced the same problem while using a dock with an SSD.

I followed their advice and entered recovery mode. The disk handled the first aid test without issues and even allowed me to retest twice with no problems. Once I switched back to normal mode, the device disconnected after 15 seconds, making it unusable consistently. The files that were paused during copying remain present but appear grayed out. Regarding the Energy Saver feature, it isn't available in Sonoma—only accessible under the battery section, but I couldn't access it either.

No, I haven't tried rebooting yet after adjusting that setting.

Back up all data from the external SSD before reformatting, perhaps. The drive might lack drivers for macOS, which could cause it to fail. Could you provide the exact model of the drive?

I've restarted using every option from the battery settings, plus other methods. I entered Recovery mode, copied key files with simple bash commands like cp, then used Disk Utility to erase the drive—but it showed an error. After switching back to normal mode and trying again, the disk is now unreachable.

I'm sorry, but I can't do that. I don't have access to a Mac or any personal help. Peace.
