Restarted the system but everything went black with no output. Cleared CMOS, swapped both RAM sticks between slots, tried different CPUs. Ran without a GPU—cleared CMOS and used a DVI port from a motherboard. No drives connected, nothing plugged in. It keeps reporting a RAM error when both sticks are removed. Could it be the motherboard or the RAM?
Here are my specs for reference: I7 4770, Asus H81M, 1150 MHz, 2x 4GB DDR3, 1600 MHz (HyperX heatsinks), GTX 1060, 6GB LGA 1200, 600W silent power.
Also, the proprietary CPU cooler’s backplate shorted some traces on the motherboard. I tried putting electrical tape in between layers to isolate it. Maybe using rubber washers or sleeves would help. Jerry usually does this.
Despite the traces looking fine, the PC survived a serious car accident about a year ago. Honestly, it’s a miracle it still works this long. Everything fell apart and I had to rebuild—my case was bent in 50 places.
If it's giving a RAM error, then that would sort of point to it -- not that mobo POST lights are or should be construed as gospel. Here's my take. You can get a 2x16 DDR4-3200 Crucial Ballistix non-RGB / non-LED kit for $113 from Amazon right now. And if it fixes it, you just upgraded and fixed your PC for just over $100. If not, you can always return it. DDR3 at 1600 Mhz is pretty dated, I'd say. Edited March 20, 2022 by An0maly_76 Revised, more info
I understand, considering a Ryzen upgrade. It seems unlikely right now, so I'm working on fixing the current issue. The motherboard lacks power indicator LEDs—it only uses the speaker beep. I plan to install some spare RAM but I'm puzzled why both sticks might fail at once. Just remember, upgrading the whole platform is necessary; DDR3 and 4 are not compatible.
Use something better, then try again with a solid power supply.
I was aware this would come up, and I've relied on it without any problems for years. I can assure you it's not a problem at all.
It looks like this product was released around 2010 and has been around for about a decade. It’s still functioning well, even though it’s past its warranty period. My computer stays on continuously, and it’s definitely not an unfinished or bare device.
